The lab is up and running, plus virus structure

The lab is operational, new people have joined, and science news.

With the year nearing its end, the lab is approved for BSL-2 work and (almost) fully operational. The first two lab members (Mehraj Ansari doing his PhD, and Jenna King working on her BSc) have joined, with more to come by January.

In other news, the teams of Susan Hafenstein (Penn State University) and official Friend of the Lab Bentley Fane from University of Arizona have published the cryo-EM structure of our main model virus, Enterogokushovirus EC6098.

Particularly notable are the mushroom-like protrusion in the virus capsid (likely responsible for host range determinaton, as Mehraj will explore) and the tightly interlinked capsid proteins, which likely remove the need for an external scaffolding protein in virion assembly.
