Wherein Paul describes a new phage infecting Rhodobacter with Friend of the Lab and Cryo-EM Wizard Pavol Bardy.
The preprint, which has not been peer reviewed yet, can be found here.
We describe the largest known microvirus to date and show how it uses it's mushroom-like protrusions for binding LPS-molecules on the host cell, followed by an opening at the 5-fold axis of symmetry to inject the phage genome into the host.
All credit goes to Pavol Bardy, Alfred Antson & their team for fantastic electron microscopy.
